There's no way we could do it without the amazing support of family, friends, and the Austin community. Your words of encouragement have gotten us through some dark hours, and helped to strengthen our resolve to make our business a success.

We're so happy to tell everyone that Rio's Brazilian now has a permanent home.

We've made an excellent arrangement with Wesam Chtay and Christopher Watters, owners of The Vintage Lounge, to use their kitchen as our permanent home, while also selling Rio's Brazilian through the lounge every Tuesday through Saturday, from 4pm to 10pm.

The Vintage Lounge is a new night spot located on Trinity between 5th and 6th streets, just down the street from Eddie V's, the Austin Convention Center, and the Hilton Hotel. We're next to the Coppertank at 504 Trinity Street.

Rio's Brazilian serves appetizers including our salgadinhos such as Kibe, Risoli de Frango, and our gluten-free Yuca-root pastry, Bolinho de Aipim. We're also serving full dinners like the traditional Estrogonofe de Frango, as well as soups, salads and desserts.

The Vintage Lounge makes caipirinhas (the right way) and many other fabulous cocktails, including the "Malaguetini," our take on a spicy Bloody Mary martini using Rio's Original Malagueta.

Our all-natural, gluten-free, and sugar-free cheese bread is now available in stores! Rio's Brazilian Pao de Queijo comes in a package of frozen rolls that go straight from the freezer to the oven. No need to rise or thaw, our bread cooks up golden brown in about twenty minutes.

Currently you can find our cheese bread in the frozen section at Whip-In (http://www.whipin.com/) and the new Royal Blue Grocery, just across from Mellow Johnny's at the corner of Nueces and West 4th Streets.

Shortly we hope to have the bread also available at both Spec's Liquors that currently carry our sauces.

Farmers' Market Task Force - thanking state legislators

Rio's Brazilian proudly became a member of the Austin Farmers' Market Task Force.

Not just advocating for fellow members, the Task Force took four "thank-you baskets" filled with local vegetables and products such as ours, to members of the state legislature that supported bills that would help all members.

For example, we thanked Representative Nelson for his support of a bill that would create a winery festival permit to allow wine to be sold at farmers’ markets.

Now all we need is caipirinha and it'll truly be Carnaval!!!

Two summer festivals - tons of fun and a bit of press

What's cookin' hot stuff? - Elias' cooking classes

In April, Elias made macrobiotic (and vegetarian, of course) feijoada for a local cooking class. It was a bit of a challenge for Elias at first to figure how to recreate Brazil's national dish without using meat, and while following the strict rules of macrobiotic cooking.

Coming soon - the Original Brazilian Cheese Bread

Dr. Jose ... guess which kind of doctor ... has shared his Mango Malagueta recipe with us. Thank you!

Jose sautees jumbo shrimp in Rio's Mango Malagueta. He adds enough so it's a bit soupy, adding vegetables and the like during the cooking process. Then, when the shrimp are done, he adds cooked fettucine to the sautee pan and mixes it all up.

Jose tells us that there's still a bit of spice in there, but not too much for those who aren't big spice fans. And he tells us it's ... it's delicious!

Rio's at Drogo's Cafe do Brasil

Rio's is proud to be a part of the culinary experience at Drogo's Cafe do Brasil.

If you haven't had a chance to visit Drogo's, or if you haven't been there in a while, you're going to love it.

Carlos Paradinha has done an excellent job of reworking the interior, logo, and menu to satisfy those that love a comfy atmosphere while enjoying some fantastic (if we do say so ourselves) Brazilian foods.

At Drogo's, you can enjoy some of Rio's salgadinhos, including our Risoli de Frango (chicken savory pastry) and our Pastel de Ricota Caseira e Espinafre (handmade riccotta and spinach pastel.)

Drogo's is located at 2nd and San Jacinto, just across from P.F. Chang's.

A very cool Web site and pubication for Brazilophiles is BRAZZIL Magazine (yep, two z's.)

The site and publication are full of information on Brazil, from politics to music to travel tips and more.

From the site:

The forum is an excellent place to discuss Brazil and any related topic. Some forum topics include "All That Samba" and "Brazil Bashing." No holds barred discussion of Brazil and it's wonders and dissapointments are available 24/7.

It's free to view all content and to receive the magazine. Most content is in English, but if you want to practice your Portuguese, there are plenty of opportunities here, too.

Who knows, while searching through Brazzil Magazine, you might even find some articles by Rio's own Ben Googins.

2007 Capitol Tree Lighting: The lights go on December 1 at the South (main) entrance to the State Capitol at Congress and 11th. The ceremony runs from 6:00pm-7:00pm and includes traditional carols and a downtown stroll along Congress Avenue with galleries, stores, and restaurants offering live music, entertainment and free food prior to and following the tree lighting.
